SOLUTION
Restraints are often used in hospitalized patients with delirium and dementia as a last resort to prevent harm to the patient or others. However, their use should be avoided whenever possible and only used after less restrictive measures have been attempted and proven ineffective. The use of restraints can lead to physical and psychological harm, and may worsen delirium and cognitive impairment. Alternatives such as close observation, bed alarms, and reorientation strategies should be considered first. If restraints are used, they should be applied and monitored in accordance with facility policies and regulations, and the patient’s condition should be regularly assessed to determine if they can be discontinued
