Thesis Statement Assignment Instructions
For this assignment you will choose a topic on families in the Canadian context, prepare a thesis statement for research (a statement of purpose explaining what your essay will be about), provide three research questions to guide you in your investigation of the topic, and list 3 preliminary sociological, scholarly, peer-reviewed articles or books on that topic, formatted in APA or ASA style.
This short piece should include:
1) A title, concisely explaining the content of the essay; 2 points
i.e. When Parents Break Up: The Effect of Divorce on Children
2) 2-3 Research questions, encapsulating the direction of inquiry for the essay; 3 points
i.e. What are the consequences of divorce on children? Do they cope adequately and grow up without facing disadvantages, or are they permanently affected by the demise of their parent’s marriage?
3) A very brief thesis statement; consider this to be the “plan”, or the “map” for your essay, which will outline its main arguments; 3 points
i.e. This essay will explore the effects of divorce on children. It will discuss the theoretical approaches sociologists have utilized to address differentials in childhood outcomes, as well as the empirical research collected on the effects of divorce on children. Sociologists are divided on this issue: some contend that divorce has a powerful effect on children’s ability to cope, one that can have long lasting effects. Others argue that divorce has limited and short lived effects: children are surprisingly resilient in the face of adversity. In this essay I will present and analyze the findings of various researchers who have studied the effects of divorce on children. I will discuss the following themes: stress and emotional and behavioral strain; the consequences of reduced parenting effectiveness; the issue of financial strain. In conclusion, I will try to establish whether divorce has a long-lasting effect on children.
4) A preliminary sociological scholarly bibliography, with 3 academic, peer-reviewed references. 2 points
