How to Write an Essay – A Classic Method

Essays are easy to write if you have a recipe that shows you how to ‘tell them what you’re going to say, say it, then tell them what you said’. This recipe assumes that your essay will be five to six paragraphs and that each paragraph will have five to six sentences. In each paragraph, the first sentence will be the topic sentence, the three to four middle sentences will each provide support as to why the topic sentence is true and the fifth sentence will summarize the paragraph. Each support sentence in the first, introductory paragraph will become topic sentences for the middle paragraphs (the body of the paper) and the last paragraph will simply be a restated version of the first paragraph. In addition to following this format, the content should be well-researched and thought-out, and each sentence should flow from the last. One way to do this is to take a word from the last sentence to help with the transition. By following this recipe, you should have well-organized essays that should help improve your grade. I also recommend that you first create a mind-map to help you to organize your ideas (taught in class discussion). This will provide a template for your essay.

Here is the essay recipe using 5 paragraphs:

FIRST PARAGRAPH (INTRODUCTORY) • 1.1 Topic Sentence: In one sentence, write what your paper is going to be about.

o 1.1a Example of a topic sentence: §§ I believe that over-population is the cause of many major

environmental problems in America. • 1.2 Why is the topic sentence in 1.1 true? Provide one sentence that states one

supporting fact of evidence. o 1.2a Make sure you make a smooth transition from the last sentence –use at

least one to two words out of the topic sentence. o 1.2b Remember: you will reword this to be the topic sentence of the second

paragraph –so make sure that it’s a big enough reason that you can support why it’s true with 3 facts.

SECOND PARAGRAPH (SUPPORT) • 2.1 Write your topic sentence by rewriting the second sentence in the first, topic

paragraph (use the sentence from step 1.2). o 2.1a Make sure to include at least a word or two from the last sentence you

wrote in the first paragraph. You want it to flow. o 2.1b Example:

§§ Sentence 1.2 is: Overpopulation stresses precious water resources. This can be rewritten as: Water resources are imperiled by overpopulation.

• 2.2 to 2.4 following the steps outlined in steps 1.2 to 1.4, provide 3 sentences of evidence that support your topic sentence in 2.1 (aka sentence 1.2).

wrote in the second paragraph. You want it to flow. • 3.2 to 3.4 following the steps outlined in steps 1.2 to 1.4, provide 3 sentences of

evidence that support your topic sentence in 3.1 (aka the rewritten version of sentence 1.3).

FOURTH PARAGRAPH (SUPPORT) • 4.1 to 4.5 By now, you can write the recipe for how to write the fourth paragraph

by using the examples from the recipe for the second and third paragraphs; do that. This will be your last paragraph providing supporting evidence (derived from sentence 1.4).

FIFTH PARAGRAPH (CONCLUSION) • 5.1 Okay – you said what you’re were going to say in the first paragraph, you told it

to them in the supporting 3 paragraphs, now simply ‘tell them what you told them’. Rephrase your concluding statement from the first, introductory paragraph (step 1.5).

o 5.1a Example §§ You wrote in step 1.5: We tend to treat the symptoms of degraded

water, land, and the atmosphere instead of addressing the real issue causing these problems in America – which is over-population.

§§ Simply rewrite it: In order to effectively protect water, land, and the atmosphere, Americans need to also address over-population.

• 5.2 to 5.4 Now that you have more information provided in your second, third, and

fourth paragraphs, you can support your topic sentence in 5.1 with three compelling support sentences.

o 5.2—4a Each of these can be taken from the summary sentence at the end of each of the middle paragraphs.

o 5.2—4b As always, each sentence should have a smooth transition; try using a word or two from the preceding sentence to help ease into the next.

• 5.5 Summarize using the same method as before. Look at your topic sentence (5.1)

and supporting sentences (5.2, 5.3, and 5.4) and meld them. o 5.5a Make a big statement! What do you want the reader to be left

thinking? State it. o 5.5b Example
