Interpreting the Past: Chinese Immigration and Legislation

Posted: January 25th, 2023

One of the main jobs of historians is to interpret the past by reviewing primary documents, scholarly secondary sources, and then creating an analysis of this research. After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of Chinese immigration and anti-Chinese legislation.

You might want to consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them: In what ways were Chinese immigrants different from other immigrant groups? What does the passage of local and federal laws tell us about the attitudes towards Chinese immigrants specifically? What is the significance of the United States vs Wong Kim Ark?

This assignment should be at least 300 words and contain your reactions or questions about some specific issue within the historical narrative which you find compelling. For full credit, your paper must not simply sum up the reading or repeat points made there. Rather, I’m looking for you to create your own interpretation, explain the emotional content of the piece, or discuss some original insight. Include citations as needed.

SOLUTION

Chinese immigrants were different from other immigrant groups in several ways. One of the main differences was that they were largely from a rural, agrarian society and were not as well-educated or skilled as many of the other immigrants coming to the United States at the time. Additionally, they were often considered racially distinct from white Americans and faced discrimination and racism.

The passage of local and federal laws, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, tells us that there were strong anti-Chinese attitudes in the United States. These laws were specifically aimed at limiting the number of Chinese immigrants coming to the United States and restricting their rights and opportunities once they were here.
