“Just Mercy” is a powerful and thought-provoking film that tells the true story of Bryan Stevenson, a young lawyer who takes on the case of Walter McMillian, a black man who has been falsely accused of murder and sentenced to death. Through the course of the film, Stevenson faces numerous obstacles and setbacks as he fights to prove McMillian’s innocence, but ultimately he is able to secure his release and bring attention to the deep-seated issues of racism and injustice that plague the criminal justice system.
After watching the movie, I can’t help but feel a sense of deep sadness and anger at the way that McMillian was treated. The fact that he was falsely accused and then subjected to a legal system that was stacked against him is a clear indication of the systemic racism that still exists in our society. Furthermore, the way that Stevenson is constantly met with resistance and hostility from the legal establishment, even when he is trying to do the right thing, is a stark reminder of the many barriers that still exist for marginalized communities in the United States.
