Question 1-

Recall the GCU core qualitative research designs presented in a previous research course. What are the different sources of data that could be used in each of the GCU core qualitative research designs? What types of data can be gathered from these sources? Explain.

In qualitative research design, various sources of data collection are available. According to Franz et al.(2019) & O’Connor & Joffe (2020), these include semi-structured interviews, open-ended questionnaires, field observations and notes, focus groups, surveys, social media (zoom, survey monkey, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok), videos, pictures, and recorded tape. The authors also affirmed that where multiple sources are explored to gather data to back a research project is called triangulation of data sources.

 

However, Braun & Clarke (2006) demystified that the data gathered from these various sources include participants’ shared experiences, feelings, and emotions about phenomena under investigation expressed in qualitative format (nominal and ordinal data variables) and thematically (Doyle et al., 2020), analyzed using codes for grouping and interpreting the frequency of themes or patterns identified to make sense out of the interpretation of the research result. Miot (2020) demystified that while nominal data are dependent, ordinal are independent data. Dependent variables can vary, while ordinal variables remain constant.

 

Nevertheless, gathering data through these sources requires proper planning, usually called research design methodology (Doyle et al., 2020). Depending on which human research subject is intended to be used, the ethical consideration of procedures is critical to avoiding research ethics violations and compliance with local and international research regulations and laws (Tomaszewski et al., 2020). For research projects involving vulnerable human research subjects, such as children, pregnant women, prisoners, physically challenged individuals, hospital patients, and the intellectually disabled (Welch et al.,2015), ethical consideration, prior approvals and permissions are of utmost importance.

Question 2- Six months ago, large amounts of funds were allocated to temporary shelters for people who are homeless in your county. However, a recent county data report indicated that people who are homeless are still sleeping in their cars or in parks. You are the lead researcher in the county’s office and are aware that the question calls for qualitative research methodology. You are tasked with exploring and understanding the barriers that will lead to more effective policy outcomes. What types of qualitative data analysis can be used to address this concern through one of the GCU core qualitative research designs?
