Prior to the 2010s, the media often used terms like “illegal alien” or “undocumented immigrant” to describe people who entered the country without proper documentation. These terms carried a negative connotation and cast immigrants in a criminal light, suggesting they were law-breakers who had no right to be in the country.

In recent years, however, a growing number of advocates have encouraged the media to adopt more neutral language, such as “undocumented individuals” or “undocumented workers.” This framing emphasizes the humanity of the individuals involved and de-emphasizes their legal status, shifting the focus away from punishment and towards compassion and understanding.

As a result of this change in language, public perception of immigration has shifted as well.
