CASE STUDY: Albert Albert Mitchell is a 36-year-old man who will be traveling to Dubai to give a business presentation in 3 months. Although he has traveled widely in the United States as a consultant, this is his first trip to the Middle East. He requests information regarding immunizations needed before his trip. Albert states that as he will be in Dubai for only a few days, he is unlikely to contract a disease in such a short time and therefore believes that it is illogical to obtain immunizations. Albert states that he has heard that the side effects of the immunizations might be worse than the diseases they prevent. He is also concerned about leaving his wife at home alone because she is 6 months pregnant. Reflective Questions How would you address Albert’s beliefs? What learning would be needed in each domain? What learning theories would you consider? How might his family concerns be addressed?

SOLUTION

Addressing Albert’s Beliefs:

As a healthcare provider, it is important to address Albert’s beliefs by providing him with accurate information and evidence-based rationales. The World Health Organization recommends certain vaccinations for travelers to Dubai, including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus, among others. These vaccinations are important to protect against potentially life-threatening diseases. It is essential to explain to Albert that the side effects of these vaccinations are generally mild and short-lived, and they are outweighed by the benefits of immunization.

Learning Required in Each Domain:

Cognitive Domain: In the cognitive domain, Albert needs to learn about the importance of vaccinations and the risks of the diseases they prevent. He needs to understand that his trip to Dubai is not too short to get sick and that certain illnesses can have severe consequences on his health and business trip.

Affective Domain: In the affective domain, Albert needs to understand that the benefits of immunization outweigh the risks, and he needs to be open to receiving the vaccinations. It is essential to address his concerns about the side effects of the immunizations by providing accurate information.

Psychomotor Domain: In the psychomotor domain, Albert needs to learn about the proper technique for administering the vaccines and potential adverse reactions to watch out for.

Learning Theories to Consider:

Behavioral Learning Theory and Social Learning Theory are the two learning theories that can be applied to address Albert’s beliefs. In the Behavioral Learning Theory, learning is acquired through reinforcement and punishment, and in this case, it can be used to reinforce the benefits of vaccinations and negative outcomes of not being vaccinated. Social Learning Theory can be used to explain that people learn from observing others, and Albert can be educated about the success of immunization programs worldwide.

Addressing Family Concerns:

It is understandable that Albert is concerned about leaving his pregnant wife at home. One way to address these concerns is to educate Albert about the vaccines’ safety in pregnant women and their effectiveness in protecting against certain diseases. Additionally, providing resources for his wife to receive medical care while he is away can ease his concerns about leaving her alone.
