CASE STUDY: Albert Albert Mitchell is a 36-year-old man who will be traveling to Dubai to give a business presentation in 3 months. Although he has traveled widely in the United States as a consultant, this is his first trip to the Middle East. He requests information regarding immunizations needed before his trip. Albert states that as he will be in Dubai for only a few days, he is unlikely to contract a disease in such a short time and therefore believes that it is illogical to obtain immunizations. Albert states that he has heard that the side effects of the immunizations might be worse than the diseases they prevent. He is also concerned about leaving his wife at home alone because she is 6 months pregnant. Reflective Questions How would you address Albert’s beliefs? What learning would be needed in each domain? What learning theories would you consider? How might his family concerns be addressed?

SOLUTION

To address Albert’s beliefs about not needing immunizations for his upcoming business trip to Dubai, I would provide him with evidence-based information on the potential risks of exposure to infectious diseases, the importance of preventative measures, and the benefits of receiving appropriate immunizations.

To address his concerns about side effects of immunizations, I would explain that serious side effects are rare and generally outweighed by the benefits of immunization. I would provide him with information on the types of immunizations that are recommended for travel to the Middle East and the specific diseases they protect against, such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, typhoid fever, and influenza. I would also emphasize the importance of ensuring that his routine vaccinations, such as measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) and tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap), are up-to-date.

In terms of learning, the following domains would need to be addressed:

  • Cognitive domain: Providing factual information about the risks of infectious diseases and the benefits of immunization.
  • Affective domain: Addressing Albert’s concerns and fears about side effects of immunizations and addressing any misperceptions or myths he may have heard.
  • Psychomotor domain: Providing information on how and where to obtain immunizations and how to prepare for travel to Dubai.

In terms of learning theories, I would consider the health belief model, which suggests that individuals are more likely to engage in health-promoting behaviors when they believe they are susceptible to a health threat and when they believe the benefits of the behavior outweigh the costs. I would also consider social learning theory, which suggests that individuals learn through observation, imitation, and reinforcement.

To address Albert’s family concerns, I would provide him with information on the steps he can take to minimize the risk of exposure to infectious diseases and prevent transmission to his family upon his return. I would advise him to practice good hygiene, such as frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals. I would also recommend that he wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants, and use insect repellent to prevent insect bites.

Additionally, I would encourage Albert to discuss his travel plans with his wife’s healthcare provider to ensure that appropriate precautions are taken to protect his wife’s health during his absence. This may include arranging for additional support or care during his absence or providing his wife with information on how to protect herself from infectious dis
