Scenario

You are a Community Outreach Coordinator for your local chapter of the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA). A recent study found that people in your area are often unsure of court processes, procedures, and outcomes. As a result, they often are not able to make informed decisions at this critical time in their lives. Using this published research, you have applied for and been awarded a small grant to create community outreach materials to educate the public about court processes.

The community outreach materials you create should show your knowledge of the following criteria. A template and other possible presentation formats are included in the Supporting Materials section.

To develop these materials, you need to have a thorough understanding of the court system and the various processes and procedures that are involved. You will need to explain these processes and procedures in a way that is easy for the average person to understand.

Here are some of the key processes and procedures that you should cover in your educational materials:

  1. Arrest and Booking – When someone is arrested, they are taken into custody and transported to a police station or jail. The booking process involves recording their personal information, taking their fingerprints and photograph, and searching them for weapons or contraband.
  2. Initial Appearance – The defendant is brought before a judge or magistrate for an initial appearance within 24-48 hours of arrest. The judge will inform the defendant of the charges against them and set bail if applicable.
