Research the FGIs used in the three types of operating rooms. Consider the following as you complete your research:
· Know the different types of operating rooms
· Review the guidelines for each space in each type of operating room
· Understand types of surgeries that take place in each type of operating room
· As a health care manager, understanding the importance of the different types of operating rooms
Part 2

Types of Operating Rooms
Part 1
The Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) provides guidelines for designing and constructing healthcare facilities, including operating rooms. The current edition of FGI guidelines is the 2022 edition.
Three types of operating rooms commonly used in healthcare facilities are:
General Operating Rooms (ORs)
General ORs are designed for a variety of surgical procedures, including emergency and elective surgeries. The FGI guidelines for General ORs include the following requirements:
· The minimum recommended size for a General OR is 400 square feet · The ceiling height should be at least 9 feet · There should be a minimum of 20 air changes per hour to maintain a sterile environment · The room must have at least two outlets for medical gases, such as oxygen and nitrogen · A separate room or alcove should be available for storage of anesthesia equipment and supplies
Special Procedure Operating Rooms (SPOs)
SPOs are designed for specific procedures that require specialized equipment or imaging, such as endoscopy, catheterization, or interventional radiology. The FGI guidelines for SPOs include the following requirements:
· The minimum recommended size for an SPO is 250 square feet · The ceiling height should be at least 9 feet · The room must have a positive air pressure to prevent contamination from outside air · The lighting should be adjustable to accommodate various procedures · Equipment, such as imaging machines, should be easily accessible and integrated into the design of the room
Hybrid Operating Rooms (HORs)
HORs combine the features of a traditional OR and an imaging suite, allowing for real-time imaging during surgery. They are used for complex procedures such as cardiac or neurosurgery. The FGI guidelines for HORs include the following requirements:
· The minimum recommended size for an HOR is 650 square feet · The ceiling height should be at least 9 feet · The room must have at least two outlets for medical gases,
Place an order in 3 easy steps. Takes less than 5 mins.
