Identify an issue that is facing our society today that is in some way related to sex and/or gender and has opposing sides. Consider a law that was recently put into or taken out of effect or is being debated. You could also look to the statements or actions of a public figure or organization that has generated significant attention from the media. The issue you select should have ample material from which you may pull to gain insight into the details surrounding it. Feel free to email your instructor if you would like to verify that an issue is appropriate or if you would like some suggestions as to what you could cover.
Explore multiple sides of the issue you have selected until you have a good understanding as to why each side believes it is right. Research the historical events that have caused the circumstances of this issue. Engage in discussions with others who have strong feelings about the issue to learn the reasons why they feel they way they do.
SOLUTION
The issue I have identified is the debate surrounding transgender athletes’ participation in sports that correspond with their gender identity. There are opposing sides to this issue, with one side arguing that transgender athletes should be allowed to participate in sports without discrimination, while the other side argues that this practice may lead to an unfair advantage.
Historical context:
This issue stems from the ongoing struggle for transgender rights and recognition. In the past, transgender individuals faced significant discrimination and were often forced to conceal their gender identity to avoid persecution. The concept of transgender athletes competing in sports is a relatively new phenomenon, as society has only recently begun to accept and recognize gender identity as separate from biological sex.
Both sides of the current argument:
On one side, advocates argue that transgender individuals should be allowed to compete in sports that correspond with their gender identity. They argue that denying transgender individuals this right is discriminatory and reinforces harmful stereotypes about gender roles. Transgender athletes have been subjected to humiliating physical examinations, restrictions on hormone treatments, and unfair bans from participating in sports.
On the other side, opponents argue that transgender athletes may have an unfair advantage over cisgender athletes. This is because transgender individuals may have physiological advantages derived from their previous biological sex. Opponents argue that these advantages may unfairly influence the outcome of sporting events and could undermine the integrity of competitive sports. They also argue that the safety of female athletes could be compromised if they are forced to compete against individuals with male bodies.
Possible resolutions:
One possible resolution to this issue would be to allow transgender athletes to participate in sports that correspond with their gender identity, but with certain restrictions in place. For example, a transgender female athlete could be required to undergo hormone therapy to reduce their testosterone levels to within the range typical for cisgender women. This could help to level the playing field and reduce concerns about unfair advantages.
