Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s own culture is superior to others, while cultural relativism is the perspective that all cultures are equal and must be understood within their own context. Ethnocentrism often leads to prejudice and discrimination as individuals judge other cultures based on their own cultural values and beliefs, rather than trying to understand and respect their differences. An example of ethnocentrism that I have observed in my personal life is the assumption that English is the only language that should be spoken in public spaces. I have seen people react negatively to individuals speaking in their native languages, even if they are not being disruptive. This ethnocentric attitude is rooted in the belief that English is the dominant language and should be the only one used in public spaces, without consideration for the linguistic diversity of our society.
