Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern that has increased worldwide over the past few decades. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity in children under the age of five increased from 32 million in 1990 to 41 million in 2016 (WHO, 2020). Childhood obesity increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke in adulthood (Ng et al., 2014). Several factors contribute to the development of childhood obesity, including genetics, the food environment, and physical activity levels (Wang & Lim, 2012). The purpose of this literature review is to examine the current literature on the causes and consequences of childhood obesity and the effectiveness of interventions to prevent and treat this condition.
