The endocrine system is composed of a collection of glands that secrete hormones to regulate physiological processes. Hormones can be classified as peptide, steroid, or amine based on their chemical structure. Hormones are regulated by a variety of factors, including negative feedback loops that ensure the proper balance of hormone secretion. The pituitary gland, located in the brain, is considered the “master gland” of the endocrine system because it controls the secretion of many hormones from other glands throughout the body.
