1. Most college students do not make the transition to the third, or commitment, stage of cognitive development. Why do you think this is so? Discuss ways in which the college curriculum in general might be restructured to encourage cognitive growth in students.

One reason may be that it is difficult to move beyond the second stage of relativism because it requires individuals to confront and grapple with complex and often conflicting perspectives, which can be uncomfortable and challenging. Additionally, students may not be exposed to diverse viewpoints or encouraged to question authority in traditional classroom settings. To encourage cognitive growth in students, the college curriculum could be restructured to prioritize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This could be done by incorporating interdisciplinary courses that expose students to a variety of perspectives and challenge them to think critically and creatively. Collaborative and experiential learning opportunities could also be integrated into the curriculum to encourage students to engage with real-world problems and develop practical skills.
