Last week, you saw how a single factor such as parental substance use can have significant effects on the biological development of a child. The way in which a parent/caregiver interacts with the child can also have lasting effects—this time, psychological. A caregiver’s warmth, presence, attentiveness, communication, parenting, and disciplinary styles all contribute to the child’s understanding of themselves and their place in the environment. Child abuse can not only harm a child physically but can also disrupt psychological development. However, with every child abuse claim, it is important to consider cultural aspects that may be at play.

SOLUTION

The Hernandez Family case presents a scenario in which a child protective services worker, Maria, is assigned to investigate a report of child abuse in the Hernandez family. The case involves a 7-year-old boy, Miguel, who was found with bruises on his arms and legs, which he said were caused by his father, Jorge. As Maria conducts her investigation, she learns that Jorge has a history of alcohol abuse and has been physically abusive to Miguel in the past. Jorge’s wife, Ana, reports that she has also been a victim of Jorge’s abuse. However, Ana is hesitant to report the abuse because she fears that her family will be separated, and she will lose custody of her children.
