We will work on the themes of Cultures and Gender Equality this week and return and reflect on this theme with various readings throughout the course. React to both themes on the discussion board with an example that you can think of from current events, every day issues, your own culture, weekly readings, etc. Respond in a paragraph or two.
SOLUTION
Regarding the theme of cultures, I think it is crucial to recognize and celebrate the diversity of cultures that exist around the world. However, it is important to avoid the trap of cultural relativism, where one accepts any cultural practice as inherently good, without analyzing its ethical implications. For example, the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is deeply rooted in some cultures, but it violates the human rights of girls and women and can have severe physical and psychological consequences. We should respect cultural traditions while also advocating for the elimination of harmful practices like FGM.
