Discipline is a necessary aspect of employee relations, and it can take two forms, namely punitive and nonpunitive. The punitive approach involves punishing employees who fail to adhere to organizational policies, rules, and regulations. Punishments may include termination, demotion, salary cuts, and suspension, among others. On the other hand, the nonpunitive approach involves helping employees correct their behavior by providing guidance, counseling, and training (Phillips & Gully, 2015). Nonpunitive approaches are essential in organizations that value employee engagement, morale, and job satisfaction. For example, if an employee violates a safety regulation, a punitive approach may be necessary to ensure that other employees do not engage in similar behavior. However, if an employee consistently fails to meet performance expectations, a nonpunitive approach that includes coaching and feedback may be more appropriate.
