Compare and contrast the structure of the Sicilian Mafia with that of the structure in the New York Mafia. Which structure do you think is most effective and why? Be specific and support your opinion.
SOLUTION
The Sicilian Mafia and the New York Mafia, also known as Cosa Nostra, have similar structures but with some notable differences. The structure of the Mafia in both regions is hierarchical, with a boss at the top, followed by an underboss, and several capos or captains, who each lead a crew of soldiers. In the Sicilian Mafia, the boss is known as the “capo dei capi” or “boss of bosses,” and he holds ultimate power and authority over all other members. Underneath the boss are the “caporegime” or captains, who manage the various factions within the organization. Soldiers are at the bottom of the hierarchy and are responsible for carrying out the Mafia’s activities, such as extortion, drug trafficking, and racketeering.
