Unique Elements of the Federal Job Search
All federal jobs are posted on USAJobs.gov, the federal government’s
online employment portal.
Searching and applying for federal employment is a complex process.
Anticipate spending more time nding and applying for a federal job
than you would to apply for a private-sector job. There are some
unique elements of the federal job search that are helpful to
understand as you begin your search.
Detailed job descriptions
Federal job descriptions are long. They usually contain multiple
sections, and include links to additional forms or worksheets that must
be completed as part of your application. Print out, read, and carefully
notate federal job descriptions to be sure you understand the job
qualications and all application requirements. Pay special attention to
the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) section. Ensure your

education and experience are a good t and meet the requirements
for the position you are applying for.
The federal government staffs all types of positions in virtually all
career elds. It is important to know that working for the federal
government does not necessarily mean working in Washington D. C.;
positions are available throughout the United States and all over the
world. If interested in federal employment, job seekers are
encouraged to familiarize themselves with USAJobs.gov, including
how to:
Set up an account
Create and upload a federal resume
Research federal occupations and agencies
Find open positions for which you are qualied based on your
education, skills and other qualications
Specialized resumes required
If you are applying for multiple federal positions, submit a customized
resume for each position. Be careful not to overstate your
qualications, but do not undersell your experiences either. Starting
pay is determined in part by the qualications you are able to
demonstrate through your application. To prove that you meet the
required qualications, clearly state your duties and accomplishments
and incorporate keywords from the job posting. Note that a federal
resume, unlike a private-sector resume, can be longer than two pages.
Do make sure to submit all required documents. Failure to do so could
result in your application not being considered.
There are many additional content and formatting specications
required for federal resumes. Because of this, we strongly suggest all
federal job seekers use the resume builder provided by the federal
government, which can be found once you create your account on
USAJobsgov.
Longer timeline
The federal application timeline is often longer than in the private-
sector. You will receive an initial receipt that your material was
submitted. However, do not be surprised if you do not hear anything
back for a month or more. When you receive contact, make sure to be
very responsive, in order not to delay the process.
While all federal jobs require that applicants apply via USAJobs.gov,
networking and other traditional job search strategies should also be
used in conjunction with the online process during a federal job
search.
Advice for Students and Recent Graduates
The Pathways Program is an effort by the federal government to
recruit and hire students and recent graduates to federal careers.
There are three avenues to federal employment under this initiative:
Internship Program for currently enrolled students
Recent Graduates Program for federal job seekers who graduated
less than two years ago
Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program for recent
graduates interested in pursuing leadership positions within the
federal government
For more information about student opportunities and to apply for
jobs open to students and/or recent graduates, please visit the
Students and Recent Graduates section of USAJobs.gov.
