Like the music of hip hop, the popularity of breaking spread quickly from its origins in New York to the rest of the country—and around the world. At the height of its popularity breaking could be seen on television, in the news, and in movies. In the lecture and in the movie The Freshest Kids you have seen how previous dance styles, gymnastics, and martial arts movies influenced breaking, and the influence of New York breaking on the dance style of the West Coast. What are some contemporary dances that you feel have been influenced by breaking? Are there any other types of dance(s) that include the element of “ritual combat” that was (is) part of the aesthetic of breaking? (Remember that you are not limited to discussing only the United States as hip hop has become a global phenomenon). In posting your reply, feel inspired to include examples that support your opinion.
