BackgroundCan you recall incidents at work or at home, where
there are too many unwritten rules? People start to assume to work
differently based on their own beliefs of understanding with no clue of
how to do it or why even do it. There is a marked difference between
unwritten rules at home and at work.
IntroductionSetting a
school /program requires that certain regulations and laws be followed.
First and most importantly we must try to adhere to them as best we
can. Do you recall my rapport with licensing and my funding offices?
Once I started showing them respect and carefully using ways to increase
our work productivity together… meaning listening to them and trying
to understand where they are coming from, they dealt with me with a
different attitude. And I genuinely sought their help in improving my
school/ program as needed. It worked better when I followed their
procedures. However, when unclear, I challenged them respectfully. By
then we had already built a rapport so clearly, misunderstandings seemed
easier to maneuver. When dealing with a funding source or your
governing board, all questionable procedures must be addressed or you
will lose your funding or your program might suffer.
Reflection What is the difference between having unwritten rules at home and at work?
What kind of unwritten rules can you describe for each location?
Describe what happened and how chaos developed when rules are assumed perceived or understood.
Describe how it was resolved or not resolved. What was the main problem?
Be
sure you state that problem clearly in this reflection because you will
continue to use that idea for the next assignment of creating a
procedure in unit 8.5.
Karen Martinez, a former student 2022, describes this realistically and humorously: “At work, appearance and grooming is everything meanwhile at home you can be in your pajamas all day if you want. In some homes, emotions can be a sign of weakness meanwhile in a school setting we teach children about feelings and that it’s okay to have them. Also, in some households, an unwritten rule is to not question an adult’s decisions meanwhile at work, one must always ask questions to make
sure things are being done correctly or simply for clarification. If
siblings randomly hit each other playing around, it doesn’t mean you can
also randomly hit a co-worker or someone in the street.”
