Assignment A10 – Parallel Editing in Silence of the LambsMost editors try and keep their craft invisible and maintain continuity. But what does an editor do when there is more than one narrative playing out at the same time? How do you show both and maintain continuity? One solution is to use cross-cutting, cutting back and forth between two or more narratives, also known as parallel editing. Parallel editing is a techniques that alternates between simultaneous shots in two or more separate spaces. It creates tension in the narrative. The most obvious example is near the climax of the film, where the sequence is essentially rapid-fire cross-cuts between Clarice Starling at Jame Gumb’s door and Jack Crawford raiding the other house.
Where you surprised with when Jack Crawford realized he had the wrong house? Describe how this parallel editing created tension in the narrative. What other production techniques are used in this film to build tension.
