Technology has the potential to make our lives easier by reducing the amount of clutter we need to work through on the Internet to access the information that really interests us.
However, perhaps intelligent agents that make recommendations based only on what we and others like us have chosen in the past (e.g., Netflix recommendations like – “because you watched Squid Games you might like X”; Amazon recommendations like “customers who bought this item also bought X”, etc.) limit us, in that they reduce the chance that we will stumble upon something (e.g. a book on a topic we’ve never heard of or a music group that’s different from the style we usually listen to) through serendipity.
