Topic Choice #1: Connecting Counseling to Philosophy
It is important to cover the basic components of the counseling profession, including the various perspectives within counseling and the philosophical foundations that pre-date the counseling profession by centuries. In the discussion, you will share your own personal interests in the counseling profession and offer commentary on the philosophies underpinning various types of mental health practices.

By way of introducing yourselves to each other, please discuss your own personal interest in this introductory course in counseling.
Giving reference to our Module One reading, what three characteristics of the counseling profession do you think are the most important for a counselor to be successful
Referring specifically to the Module One reading, describe the role of philosophy in shaping what would later become many different types of mental health care. For example, who are some of the most important ancient and contemporary philosophers that have influenced the counseling profession?
Topic Choice #2: Counseling as an Extension of Humanism
Humanism includes the academic viewpoints toward counseling, which are rooted in philosophy but also, the humanistic perspective has demonstrated tremendous success in treating a whole host of problem behaviors. This discussion will analyze how humanism can be applied successfully.

Respond to the following questions:
Referencing Perepiczka, M., & Scholl, M. B. (2012), describe and comment on three characteristics of the Association for Humanistic Counseling.
Giving direct reference to all three of the above articles, explain how humanism can contribute to increased creativity in the counseling profession, and how humanism can be applied in treating people who self-injure.
(Note: these applications are not directly spelled out in these articles, so you have to start with your definition of humanistic counseling first, and then explain how it might be applied).

Also, be sure that your responses are respectful, substantive, and consistent with the expectations for discussion, as stated by the prompt. Be sure to monitor and respond to feedback to your major thread post throughout the module. Be sure also to reply to your classmates’ postings and that your responses are within the designated due dates for this discussion activity. Please direct any questions you may have to your instructor.
