Hormones play a critical role in the regulation of bone growth and maintenance. The two most important hormones that influence bone health are estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen is essential for the development and maintenance of bone mass in women. It helps to promote the activity of bone-building cells called osteoblasts and inhibits the activity of bone-resorbing cells called osteoclasts. Estrogen levels typically decrease after menopause, which can lead to a decrease in bone density and an increased risk of osteoporosis.
